The museum was opened on 16 August 1969 at the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of fire-fighter's activity in Slovenia. The founder of the museum is Slovenian Fire-fighters Association and Metlika was chosen because of the fact that the first volunteer fire-fighters association in Slovenia was established here on 18 th of September 1869.

The historical heritage of the fire-fighting activity is presented in two exhibition areas in the Slovenian Fire-fighters's Museum in Metlika.

The first area is located in the renovated and reorganised building of the previous Metlika cinema near the castle. There are three exhibition areas here:

The Gallery is intended for presentation of the development of fire-fighters' activity until the First World War. The Metlika fire brigade is presented as well as various historical materials from all over Slovenia, especially numerous fire-fighting photos from the period before the First World War and the oldest fire-fighting newsletter. The visitors can see interesting helmets, fire-fighter's small hatchets, horns and trumpets, uniforms, awards, epaulettes, medals, small fire-fighters' tools and models of the oldest fire engines. The historical materials are completed by paintings (a night guard, a fire in the medieval town) and valuable fire-fighters' flags. In the video-corner, the visitors can watch videotapes with fire-fighting topics.

In the hall, the visitors will find the founders of the fire-fighting activity in Slovenia as well as the documents and photographs from the period between the First and the Second World War and also after Second World War.

There are also numerous interesting small fire-fighting objects in this exhibition area and an impressive hook ladder owned by fire-fighters from Kamnik, which was bought in Vienna in 1889.

In the cellar area some old fire engines are diplayed which the Slovenian Fire-fighter's Museum received as a gift from the Technical Museum from Bistra.
